VIDEO: Government funding of COVID drugs and vaccines.


Panelists present research on the role of governments in development of COVID-19 drugs and vaccines. Governments have provided massive funding towards development of COVID-19 technologies. Such funding determines the rights in patents, data and know-how; and conditions on pricing and reporting of R&D and manufacturing costs, if any. Panelists discuss (1) studies of drug and vaccine candidates that have benefited from extensive public support, (2) the lack of transparency over government-funded research, including the contracts and costs of trials; (3) how “Other Transactions Authority” contracts have undermined safeguards; and (4) failures to disclose government funding in patents and applications.
