VIDEO: Open Access and Copyright in Times of COVID-19
The emergency of Covid-19 saw an initial surge in online use, particularly in education, but also in personal use for entertainment. There was ample opportunity to encourage educators to make full use of open access materials and their fair use and fair dealing rights. However, as the pandemic has dragged on, initial philanthropic and indulgent policies have turned to concern and typical lockdowns of their own from copyright maximalists. The emergence of Black Lives Matters serves to underscore the cultural imperative of open access materials and liberal fair use policies to ensure access to cultural materials. This Ted talk will advocate for such policies to go beyond and build on the lessons from Covid-19.
