People’s vulnerability to global change
The world has experienced dramatic environmental and socio-economic changes in recent decades. Phenomena like population growth, rapid urbanisation processes, increasing poverty but also environmental degradation, climate change, civil war, and the increase in natural disasters have affected the social and economic development in many parts of the world, particularly developing countries. Because of these different factors, which are summarised under the term “global change”, many people have become more and vulnerable to the negative effects of very different hazards. Thus the concept of poverty and vulnerability has become more and more prominent in recent decades.
