Dr. Germán Velásquez currently works at the South Center in Geneva, Switzerland, where he is Special Adviser for Health and Development.
Until May 2010, he was director of the WHO department on “Public health, innovation and intellectual property” in the office of the WHO Director-General. Velásquez represented the WHO in the WTO Council for TRIPS from 2001 to 2010.
Germán Velásquez is the author or co-author of numerous publications on the economics of health and medicines, social security systems, globalization, international trade agreements and intellectual property in access to medicines.
Germán Velásquez graduated from the Javeriana University, Bogotá (Colombia) in Philosophy and Humanities, then obtained a master’s degree in Economics and a PhD in Health Economics from the Sorbonne University in Paris, France. In 2010 he received an Honorary Doctorate in Public Health from the University of Caldas, in Colombia. In October 2015 he received an Honorary Doctorate in Medicine from the Complutense University of Madrid.
