VIDEO: Transnational Interference with the Privacy of the Home or the Correspondence of Its Inhabitants as a Crime Against Humanity
During the Covid-19 pandemic, public discourse and routine life have been heavily reliant on the Internet and other forms of telecommunication. Human rights law guarantees the right to privacy and the protection of homes and correspondence from arbitrary or unlawful interference, but it is relatively weak and its deterrent effect is limited. This talk identifies ways in which the severe and systematic interference with the privacy of the home or with means of correspondence between person and person resembles other offenses regarded as crimes against humanity, including by threatening international peace and other human rights, offending widely shared values, transcending national borders, and inhibiting human rights defenders from mobilizing action against other atrocities.
